10 Daily Habits That Can Boost Your Mental Health and Physical Health Too!
I used to be a fast-food junkie. I could often be seen with a burrito or whopper in one hand and a can of soda in the other. My lack of discipline extended beyond my eating habits.
I struggled to stay organized and motivated in my personal and professional life. Living this kind of lifestyle began to affect my mental well-being. I had always dreamed of becoming a successful businessman, or a motivational speaker, but my unhealthy habits and lack of focus were holding me back.
One day, I had a realization that I needed to make a change. I realized that I could not continue living an unhealthy lifestyle and expect to achieve my goals. I decided to take action and began a journey towards self-improvement.
I started to read books and attend seminars on personal development and business success. I surrounded myself with optimistic individuals. I listened to inspirational audios, and began to feel better about myself, which led to better eating habits. I still love a juicy cheeseburger, but I don't plan my daily schedule around fast-food visits.
It took me decades to realize that mental health is equally significant as physical health, and prioritizing one's mental wellbeing is crucial. While some people may think that improving your mental health requires major lifestyle changes, it's actually the small, daily habits that can make the biggest difference.
I never became a motivational speaker, but I did become successful in business and accomplished my speaking dream as a Pastor and now a coach.
So, long story short, for the past twenty years I've been sharing my journey. I know I've been a bit too evangelical at times about my enthusiasm for self-improvement. I have a long way to go, but my intention has always been to shine a light on a holistic lifestyle.
So, with that intention, these are 10 daily habits that I've adopted for my mental and spiritual well-being:
1. Start your day with a positive mindset: Instead of hitting snooze repeatedly and rushing through your morning routine, take a few minutes to set a positive intention for the day. Think about what you are grateful for, and set a goal for something you want to achieve that day.
2. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, without judgment. This can help you manage stress, reduce anxiety, and improve your overall mental well-being. You can practice mindfulness by simply focusing on your breath for a few minutes each day.
3. Get moving: Exercise has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health. It doesn't have to be a high-intensity workout either; even a short walk or yoga session can be beneficial.
4. Eat a healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet can have a significant impact on your mental health. Make sure to incorporate plenty of low glycemic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein into your meals (preferably organic).
5. Connect with others: Social connections are important for mental well-being. Make an effort to reach out to friends and family, or join a group or club that interests you.
6. Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself is essential for mental health. This can be as simple as taking a relaxing bath, reading a book, or getting a good night's sleep.
7. Set boundaries: Learning to say no and setting healthy boundaries can help reduce stress and improve your mental well-being.
8. Challenge negative thoughts: Negative self-talk can be detrimental to mental health. Challenge negative thoughts by questioning their validity and replacing them with positive affirmations.
9. Learn something new: Learning new skills or taking up a new hobby can help improve mental well-being and provide a sense of accomplishment.
10. Unplug: In today's digital age, it's important to take a break from technology. Try to limit screen time and spend more time engaging in activities that promote mental well-being, such as reading, journaling, or spending time in nature.
Incorporating these 10 daily habits into your routine can help improve your mental well-being and lead to a happier, healthier life. Remember, it's the small, daily habits that can make the biggest difference!
